What is biblical cosmology?

Biblical cosmology is the ancient understanding of the universe as described in the Bible. According to this cosmology, the universe is divided into three main tiers: heaven (the dwelling place of God), earth (where humans live), and the underworld (the realm of the dead).

In the Book of Genesis, the creation story describes how God created the heavens and the earth in six days, culminating in the creation of humans on the sixth day. This story also describes the firmament, a solid dome that separates the waters above (the heavens) from the waters below (the earth).

The Bible also mentions other celestial bodies, including the sun, moon, and stars, which were created to provide light and to mark the seasons and times.

The biblical cosmology also includes references to the angels and demons that inhabit the spiritual realm, as well as the concept of Sheol, the place of the dead, where souls go after death.

Overall, biblical cosmology reflects the ancient understanding of the universe as a hierarchically ordered system, with God at the top and humans and other beings occupying different levels of existence.
